Coop

We're getting chickens!

My crafty husband has designed and built a chicken coop and it's almost finished...needs a little paint still. We are now searching the McMurray Hatchery catalog for the types of chickens we want...decisions, decisions. It looks like we are going to have to wait for an April hatching dates to get the chicks we want which may be best because the colder weather will be behind us by then.

Here are some pics of the coop in the process of being built and finished except for paint...

Oh man... I'm drooling with envy!

Does it have a heater? What's your plan for winter?

Yes, it is not exactly finished yet but it will be painted and will have electricity running out to it for heat and lighting. We ordered our babies and they arrive on April 9th.

Okay, I've been talking with chicken experts in our area and I guess we wouldn't need a heater where we live, but would need to pour hot water into the water dish when it was freezing. BUT (the big but!) I still have to convince my husband that we should get chickens. :)

That is the fanciest chicken coop I have ever seen! You could rent that out. Your chickens will be living in luxury!

Pam, if you only knew the drama that accompanied the making of this chicken coop. My husband, the perfectionist...and he tells me the kids get it from me, spent 2 years (YEARS!!!) researching chicken coops on the internet, in books, youtube videos, etc... I kept telling him "We just need a box with a little door for them to go in." So, after buying 4 different types of plans he decides to make up his own coop. This is the result and then he had to put huge wheels on it because it's too heavy to move. LOL
