All Ireland Champion!!!

We've had a very fun and exciting week traveling to Ireland for the Fleadh Cheoil (All Ireland/world championships of Irish music) competition with Haley's friend, Sofia, and her mother, Kate. We were not going to go to the Fleadh this year...we thought Haley would take a year off this year since she will still be in the under 12 age group next year and we couldn't afford for more than two of us to go but my husband did not want Haley and I to go alone. Things changed after Sofia took 1st at the MidAtlantic Fleadh in under 12 slow airs and qualified to go. After a lot of discussion at home and through emails, Kate and I came up with a plan to travel together with the girls splitting costs when we could and keeping each other company.

So last Tuesday night we flew off to Dublin from JFK. We flew through the night, landed in Dublin at 9am then took a bus into the city for the day. Our first stop was the Drury Hotel where we checked in and dropped off our luggage. We then walked through the city, did a little shopping, walked through Dublinia, and St. Stephen's Green. We had dinner and brown bread ice cream.

After a very loud night in the city...ie. little sleep. We headed back to the airport, picked up the car, and drove toward Derry with a quick stop at Knowth to see the passage tombs in the rain. We had a few moments of laughter (and terror...LOL) in the car driving on the left side of the road on the tiny little streets in the Ireland countryside but we made it safely to Derry. We then had some difficulty finding our B&B...again on tiny one car wide roads in the country. (Thank goodness no one was coming the other way!!!) But our host came out to find and rescue us and we found ourselves at the most beautiful B&B we've been in yet (Five Oaks B&B).

The next rainy morning we had a delicious full Irish breakfast, the girls practiced, then our hostess showed us how to get to the city and where to park. We walked across Peace Bridge, walked the walls around Derry, and saw all the sights. The girls did a little busking for pocket money then we found some dinner and went back to the B&B to relax.

Busking
Saturday was competition day. We woke early and had an early breakfast then headed to Ulster University to watch our friends in the under 15 division before Haley's competition. Haley's 1st competition was at noon. There were 14 really talented kids competing but Haley played her very best and came away with 1st in solo fiddle. The under 12 slow air competition was set to begin at 1:30 but the solo fiddle did not finish until 2:15 so as soon as we were finished, we rushed into the adjacent building for slow airs. We arrived when there were only two before Haley and Sofia (who were scheduled to be 11 and 12 out of 14). Haley and Sofia played really well. To our amazement, Haley took the trophy (1st place) in under 12 slow airs as well! It is an accomplishment to win an All Ireland title in one event but to win in two is very rare.

We ran from slow airs to see the under 18 duos compete because friends were competing in that then we rushed across campus to see if we could catch Haley's friend, Emily, competing in under 12 harp slow airs. We entered the room just as they called Emily's name! After Emily played, Haley said, "That was so beautiful I could not even breath!" We waited around for the results and Emily placed 1st! (The girls brought home three All Ireland cups to the CCE Delaware Valley!)

It was 8pm by the time we finished watching competitions and we were unable to find a restaurant without a huge wait (we heard there were 30, 000 people at the Fleadh!) so we grabbed a bite at the local supermarket then went back to the B&B to eat it.

Sunday was a more relaxing day. We got up and ate our Irish breakfast then headed into town to see Haley's friend in the under 18 fiddle slow air and another friend in the Senior solo fiddle competitions. After the senior competition, the videographer from Comhaltas (the group that runs the Fleadh) asked Haley to play with the Senior All Ireland winner so he could record them together. We then had dinner at a restaurant with the best food and the girls, with their friend, Joanna, busked for awhile before we headed in for the night.

Monday was an early rise morning. We had to drive back to Dublin, 3 hours, to turn in our rental car before noon. We went to check into our hotel and then took a bus into the city for a walk around Trinity College, shopping, dinner and some more brown bread ice-cream.

Tuesday was our travel home day. We ran into friends at the airport and everyone was on the same flight. It was a bumpy ride home but we made it safely!

Weekend Ramblings...

I'm thinking I may make a weekly post on our weekend music exploits because I am getting tired of coming up with titles for them all.

This weekend was chock full of music (of course). Friday afternoon on our way to New York for her fiddle lesson, I asked Haley if she got tired of driving all over the place and all the performances she does. She seemed shocked I would think that. She said those are the parts of her music that are the most fun and she wants more. So we drove to New York Friday for a late night fiddle lesson then did a sleep over so she could meet her friend, Sofia, in the city on Saturday.

The girls had busking plans for Washington Square Park. They are determined to help pay their part for their trips to Ireland next week. The day started out not looking very promising. It was raining softly most of the morning (as you can tell from the picture below) so they found a spot under the big arch which provided shelter for their fiddles and wonderful acoustics. They sounded like they were mic'ed.

They did pretty well there then we packed up when they got tired of playing. They enjoyed running over to check out the progress of the sand artist creating his work not far away (the guy on his knees behind them in this picture). They left him a tip because he was very nice to them. Sofia accidentally lost her bow down the grate in front of them and he came over and lifted it so she could retrieve it unharmed. (Whew! The perils of busking!)

The sun eventually came out and the girls took a break for ice-cream while sitting near the fountain. Here they are showing off their green tinged tongues.

Sunday was what has become our annual fundraiser for Haley and her friend Emily for their trip to Ireland. A local pub, Lazy Lanigans, allows us to come in and take over their restaurant for an afternoon. The kids provided music, people came and danced, and we had a silent auction of 22 items and baskets donated by friends, supporters, and local businesses. We have done a fundraiser for the last five years and each year I am overwhelmed by the number of people who come out to support the girls.

We put a call out for musicians this year and it seemed all of them had other plans for the day so Haley and Dylan provided the ceili music all on their own. They did a great job...kept a strong, fast beat for the dancers and stoppped and started the music on time!

Donations from the AOH groups in PA.
The fundraiser was very successful. We couldn't have done it without all the people who donated and/or attended. We especially couldn't have done it without help from the people below. John and Jackie Kelly have become like Haley's adoptive grandparents. Jackie had back surgery a couple months ago but she worked hard those months, not only to recover, but to put together items (many which she donated herself) and coordinated the entire silent auction for us. The auction was an amazing success and she's an amazing person! We can't possibly thank her enough for all she does for us.

We are now on the countdown for our trip to Ireland this year! We are looking forward to traveling with Sofia and her mother and seeing a new part of the island. Go Derry!

Greater Hartford Irish Festival 2013

Haley and I have spent a large part of our summer traveling. She leads a rather exciting life and needs me along for the ride. Last weekend we drove to CT for the Greater Hartford Irish Festival so Haley could play with The John Whelan Band. The really great part was Haley's friend, Sofia, and her family live close enough to the festival that we were able to spend the weekend with them. We drove up on Friday and the girls spent all afternoon and evening tackling a long list of things they had planned to do...everything from making jewelry to homemade soaps and scrubs to playing some music. They kept each other busy all day.

Saturday morning we got up early, the girls made French toast, and then we headed to the local lake beach for a swim. Haley and Sofia ran with boogie boards into the lake, jumped off the docks, and took a turn at paddling a couple kayaks Sofia's father and brother had rented. After swimming came showers, lunch, and a drive to the festival. Haley did a sound check with the band then performed...the band was scheduled to play 30 min after the festival opened.

They played a great set broadcast live over the internet. We watched a ceili band, did a little dancing, looked at all the crafts on display, and ate some festival food before heading back to Sofia's.

Sunday, Haley and I headed to Brian's for a fiddle lesson before a rough drive home. Little did we know that the normally 2.5 hour drive home from White Plains would take over 4 hours. We hit traffic a couple times then closer to home, a torrential downpour caused flooding of a major road. Haley and I made it through the flooded area only to find ourselves as one of 3-4 cars on a normally very busy highway with traffic backed up going the other way for miles and miles. It looked like the zombie apocalypse had hit and everyone was leaving New Jersey. We made it home eventually.

Recording Gig....

My daughter was hired today to go into a recording studio to set down violin tracks onto a song....a song she'd never heard before this afternoon. The man running the show would give her an idea of what he wanted, let her listen to the part of the track and play around with it, then tell her to take the basic melody and "run with it." According to Clay, Haley, "spoke the language." She understood exactly what he meant when he said things to her like where to start, which note to change, how to add more feeling or make something fancier and she took direction really well. She came up with some amazing sounding stuff to go along with the song with melody lines, harmony, and rifts. Sometimes Clay had an exact idea of what he wanted, sometimes he let her play around and come up with something herself, and other times she played something he hadn't thought of before and he liked it and kept it.

It was a really neat experience and something she'd never done before. I guess we can now add the pop music genre to her list.

Swannanoa Gathering 2013

Wow! It's been awhile since I posted. We've been busy. We just had one of our favorite weeks of the year (for the past five years) at the Swannanoa Gathering in North Carolina. This year Ritch and Newt drove down with us so they could visit his sister and family while Haley, Dylan, and I went to camp.  We broke up the drive down by stopping to see our new grandnephew, James, and having lunch with his parents. What an adorable little guy!

We arrived at Kim's house around 4pm. They were having similar weather to what we've had....lots and lots of rain. Newt, whose main goal in life is to fish and wrestle claimed he would catch enough fish from their pond to do a fish fry the next day. He woke early (I heard him walking around about 6am) and got in the boat as soon as someone unlocked the garage for him to get his pole. Uncle James joined him and between the two of them and a couple fish from Dylan and Thomas, they caught enough to feed 12 people with quite a bit left over.

Can't hardly see it but Thomas' dog, Pepper, is swimming out to get in the boat.

Haley and her cousin, Meredith. They spent the day doing hair and make-up.
We had to get up early in the morning to be at Swannanoa. I was lucky enough to get a volunteer job which helped pay for Dylan's tuition so I had to help with checking in students. My kids love everything about camp. We have been going for five years and see many of the same people plus make some new friends each year. Many of the people have watched my kids grow up over the years.

This year Haley took an Advanced Scottish Fiddle class with Brian McNeill which she absolutely loved. She came out of class the first day and said she was going to take it again next year. She also signed up for an Irish Fiddle class with Liz Carroll. It was an intermediate class but she really wanted to learn some tunes from Liz. She and her friend Mackenzie ended up asking Liz to record tunes for them each day then went into another room or outside to learn them together...plus taught each other some of their own tunes.

Dylan took a guitar class with Eamon O'Leary and another with John Doyle plus a banjo class with Eamon. He learned some new tunes and a new tuning for his guitar from John so he was very happy.

Our evenings were spent listening to concerts with the great instructors performing, going to dances (or the kids helping play for them), and ended with the kids playing sessions until the wee hours.

"Music Brings People Together."

A couple weeks ago at Haley's fiddle teacher's home, someone ascribed that quote to the late, great Irish piano player Felix Dolan and we all agreed as we stood around looking at each other. None of us would know the other if it weren't for the music. I was thinking about that quote again this weekend as we spent Saturday evening with a large group of musicians at a "stealth wedding" and Sunday evening at an Irish session. I think about all the wonderful people who have become such a large part of our lives because of the music.

A couple weeks ago we were invited to a party at our friends', Marion and Gabe's, home. They often host get togethers with good food and great music until all hours of the night so we looked forward to going. Early last week I received a call from Marion asking if we could keep a secret. Their little get together was not simply to celebrate her graduation (she just received her PhD) and Gabe's new baby (a baby grand piano, that is)...they were going to surprise everyone and tie the knot at the party and wanted to know if Haley would provide the music for their wedding!

Saturday night we arrived a bit early. They were still preparing the bouquets and hair rings so Haley got to make her own. We helped hide everything just as the first unsuspecting guest arrived. The party began with lots of music....Gabe on his new piano with fiddling by Haley and Paraic then Jeremy joined in, whistle provided by Paddy, singing, piano playing by a talented young pianist, and a bit of dancing from Josh. (As an aside...you just have to check out the video of Josh and his dance group on America's Got Talent. They are awesome!!!! Actually this video is even better because it shows the best parts of the dance...the parts America's Got Talent edited out.)

Eventually they got everyone into the living room to watch Josh dance to Haley's fiddling.

Josh getting ready to dance.

Then, as had been worked out prior, Gabe asked Haley to play the slow air she had played to qualify for the All Ireland. (It was their way to explain Haley playing without Gabe accompanying on piano.) When she finished, the asked for an encore and Haley started playing an O'Carolan tune so Marion could make a quick change into her wedding gown. When she got the signal, Haley switched to Planxty Fanny Power and the bridesmaids and bridesman began walking down the make-shift aisle. It was about then the "audience" of fellow party goers began to figure out what was happening...or began to think they were doing a rendition of Midsummer's Night Dream.

The wedding was beautiful! The vows brought tears to my eyes. The surprise was wonderful!

The evening continued with more music and I sat around thinking what an amazing life my child gets to lead. One filled with wonderful music and friends!
